SUMMARY:Bystander Intervention Training - UVic Office of Student Life
DESCRIPTION:LOCATION: TBD (check http://www.uvic.ca/services/studentlife/initiatives/bystander-intervention for update) \nTo register: http://www.uvic.ca/services/studentlife/initiatives/bystander-intervention/register/index.php \nThe Office of Student Life is introducing a new Bystander Intervention Training Program this fall. Based on the University of New Hampshire’s acclaimed “Bringing in the Bystander” Program\, the training teaches students how to overcome resistance to checking in and intervening when they observe the potential for sexualized violence to occur. By empowering students to become active bystanders\, we hope to create a compassionate community response to preventing sexualized violence and fostering a safer environment on campus. \nIn this three hour workshop\, students will: \n\nLearn how to identify situations where bystander intervention is appropriate and how to overcome barriers to successful intervention\nGain a deeper understanding of the consequences of sexual violence for victims/survivors and communities\nLearn how to identify a continuum of inappropriate sexual behaviours\nBuild increased empathy for victims of sexual violence and understand the importance of supportive responses to those who disclose\n\nBringing in the Bystander is a free training program open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Students who complete the training will receive a certificate for participation and credit on their co-curricular record. The co-curricular record allows students to document their extracurricular volunteer and leadership activities in a university-validated document generated by UVic Co-op and Career Services. This record will provide evidence of students’ extracurricular achievements when they apply for jobs\, graduate school and scholarships.

SUMMARY:Sexualized Violence Awareness Week - An Evening for Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Event Location: Petch fountain outside the library\, or if raining we will move inside the University Centre Lobby \nWe are hosting an event to honour the advocacy and resiliency of survivors and those impacted by sexualized violence. Come share space with us on the final evening of Sexualized Violence Awareness Week to thank survivors and those impacted by sexualized violence for their crucial role in creating UVic’s first ever Sexualized Violence Prevention and Response Policy. This event is for survivors\, those impacted by sexualized violence and their allies. It is a time for our stories\, our resistance and our community to be honoured. \nWe want to recognize the inherent connections between colonialism and all other forms of violence. Recognizing the violence of ongoing colonialism and engaging in anti-colonial actions is critical to our work as anti-violence advocates. The anti.violence.project and the organizers of this event acknowledge the Lkwungen\, WSÁNEĆ \, and Esquimalt peoples on whose unceded territories we live\, work\, and play. \nThe evening will include: \n\nLive performances from local artists including poetry\, painting\, and music\nFood and drinks to share together\nA candlelight vigil to honour our resistance and community\nCommunity speakers\nCrafting and messages to survivors\nTrained support staff on site\n\nAccessibility: This event will be held at the University of Victoria in front of the Petch Fountain. The area is wheelchair accessible and accessible washrooms are located in the Biblio Cafe near the event. If due to weather conditions we must move inside\, we will move the event to the University Centre lobby which is also wheelchair accessible. We will also do our best to accommodate a variety of dietary needs.

SUMMARY:Film: A Better Man
DESCRIPTION:On a night 22 years ago\, 18-year-old Attiya Khan ran through the streets\, frightened for her life. She was fleeing her ex-boyfriend Steve\, who’d been abusing her on a daily basis. Now\, all these years later\, Attiya has asked Steve to meet. She wants to know if he is willing to take responsibility for his violent actions. This emotionally raw first meeting\, filmed by Attiya with Steve’s consent\, is the starting point. The rough footage also marks a new beginning in Attiya’s recovery process—as well as an important starting point for Steve. For the first time ever\, he speaks of the abuse and opens the door to dealing with the past. Illuminating a new paradigm for domestic-violence prevention\, “A Better Man” offers a fresh look at the healing and revelation that can happen for everyone involved when men take responsibility for their abuse. It also empowers audience members to play new roles in challenging domestic violence\, whether it’s in their own relationships or as part of a broader movement for social change. –National Film Board of Canada

SUMMARY:Grad Students 'Welcome'* Fair
DESCRIPTION:We will be tabling at the Grad Students ‘Welcome’* Fair. We have safer sex supplies\, stickers\, colouring pages\, buttons\, zines\, and volunteer applications. Come find us by the fountain at UVic! \n*Note: the word “welcome” has a specific meaning in the context of colonization and settlers’ presumed entitlement to Indigenous lands\, bodies\, and cultures. Many Indigenous peoples have processes to welcome and greet visitors and so the word has particular colonial implications when visitors (especially settlers) say “welcome” to territories that aren’t ours to welcome people to. As part of AVP working to learn and unlearn we are seeking to be more aware of how we use language\, and encourage other people who are not from local nations to also be aware of this. When other mixed organizations use “welcome” in the title of an event that we are participating in\, we will put it in quotation marks and include an explanation of some of the issues around how this word is used.

SUMMARY:Apply for AVP Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:We are seeking enthusiastic and caring people of all genders and backgrounds to volunteer with AVP. Our 30-40 hour training\, held once a year (October and possibly the first week of November)\, provides information about gender-based violence and intersecting forms of violence\, prevention\, support and outreach. Volunteering with us is an opportunity to contribute to community on and off campus\, be involved in activism\, learn a range of skills\, and meet like-minded folks and form lasting friendships. \nWe only have 20 volunteer training spots available so after reviewing applications we may interview short-listed applicants. We then invite successful candidates to attend the training. Topics covered in training include: colonization\, sexualized violence and consent\, bystander intervention\, sex positivity and desire\, gender beyond the binary\, and self and community care. AVP’s training is done from an anti-colonial\, intersectional framework. We conclude the training by having an exit interview to confirm that the volunteer and AVP’s work are a good fit. \nVolunteers are expected to commit to working with AVP throughout the Fall and Spring term for an average 1–3 hrs/week. Volunteer roles include: supporting survivors\, allies\, and people who have caused harm; outreach initiatives that may include peer education; engaging groups through activities and table displays; research projects; writing blog posts or book reviews; helping with administration tasks\, and facilitating workshops. We also collaborate and volunteer with many groups to commemorate\, celebrate\, resist\, and protest in the form of marches\, cultural events and gatherings\, joint conferences or workshops. \nFor more information see https://www.antiviolenceproject.org/volunteers or email volunteer [at] antiviolenceproject [dot] org.
