Below is a detailed summary of each workshop. If you would like to learn more or book a workshop please email avpoperations [at] uvss [dot] ca
| Understanding Consent Culture Workshop | Provides folks with the information, skills, and opportunity to understand and practice consent. Through activities and discussion, we will bust myths about sexualized violence and gender, explore the concept of rape culture and learn about consent (what it is, why it’s required, and how to practice it). This workshop provides an opportunity for us to talk in a supportive and sex-positive space about how we can build consent into our everyday lives and into our relationships with the people we care about. Whether you’re learning about consent for the first time or you know you care deeply about this topic, taking part in this workshop will provide you with some foundational principles and a chance to dive into the nuances of consent. |
| Supporting a Survivor Workshop | Receiving a disclosure can feel intimidating if you don’t know how best to respond, which is why the Anti-Violence Project has designed this workshop to address how we can all support the survivors in our lives. Throughout the workshop we will cover the very important differences between support, disclosure and reporting and provide some foundations for supporting survivors of sexualized violence. We will discuss different approaches and tools that can be used when supporting someone, including active listening, believing survivors, busting myths, showing empathy, and making referrals. While the focus of this workshop is supporting survivors of sexualized violence, many of the topics and skills we cover will be applicable to support in other contexts. |
| Anti-Oppression Workshop | Understanding anti-oppression is essential to understanding and preventing gender-based and sexualized violence within our communities. In this workshop, you will talk about power, oppression, privilege, and how each of these things are interconnected. You will learn about what anti-oppression is, what it looks like, and how to practice it day to day. We will also explore some tools that allow you to embody this practice, such as allyship and accountability. NOTE: This section can be tailored to specific groups of people depending on their positionality within their roles. Lastly, you will have an opportunity to practice anti-oppression hands on with some role-play based scenarios. |
| Boundaries Workshop | It is essential to understand the importance of boundaries when it comes to consent. It is essential that everyone understands boundaries not only in the context of gender-based and sexualized violence but simply in our everyday lives. In this workshop, you will feel confident in your definition of what a boundary is. You will then learn about the “Gentle Refusal Model.” We will also explore rejection and how to accept rejection as well as reject others. We will understand how to hold our boundaries and explore the “Want/Will/Won’t” tool that will help you understand your own boundaries better. |
| Safety, Consent, and Responding to Disclosure Workshop | In this workshop we will define safety, consent, and disclosures. We will unpack the myths and realities surrounding sexualized violence. You will understand the impact of gender and power when it comes to sexualized violence and the impacts of rape and consent culture as well. Lastly, you will learn how to receive a disclosure and what to do afterwards within specific contexts. For example, if you are a TA receiving a disclosure, we will share what resources are available both on and off campus to refer someone to and gain an understanding of UVic’s Sexualized Violence Policy. |
