The Anti.Violence.Project (AVP) would like to invite other campuses to our first “Campus to Campus: Cultivating Consent Culture” conference, with this year’s theme “Train the Trainer” on August 5-7, 2015

What this conference is all about:

AVP recently had the opportunity to connect with universities in other parts of the country, to share the work we have done around the “Let’s Get Consensual” campaign, and to hear what other folks are working on in their communities. The feedback we have received has been a wish for on-going dialogue about the ways we can all contribute to shifting the culture on our campuses to one of consent.

This conference is AVP’s invitation for you to come and learn about the work we are doing, and to offer an opportunity to take our work back into your communities. Our goal with this conference is to give an accessible, robust, and intersectional understanding of gender-based and sexualized violence, and to provide useful tools for campuses to respond to incidents of violence. We hope to contribute to a shift in campus culture from one of rape culture to communities of respect and care where everyone can be held with dignity, safety, and accountability.

We are offering to share our Consent Workshop, train folks in how to facilitate the material and how to engage students in talking about consent, and encourage student leadership in ‘positive masculinity’. Conference participants will have the opportunity to engage in and learn about:

  • The roots of rape culture starting with colonization, permission-giving, and land acknowledgements.
  • Understandings of the social myths and values that inform our responses as a society and as institutions
  • Patriarchy, heteronormativity, cis-sexism, gender expectations, and trans-antagonism
  • A tool we call the “rape culture triangle” where we identify access points for people to address gender based and sexualized violence, and encourage meaningful bystander intervention
  • In-depth look at our six steps of consent facilitated through a Venn diagram.

Along with a complete training around consent, institutions will be welcomed to take with them a starter kit and materials for our “Let’s Get Consensual” campaign. Included in your starter kit will be templates for all of the written materials, posters, handbills, stickers, buttons, and t-shirts.

Finally, we would also like to offer space for a community share back in the form of a tabling event on the last day – for participants to bring and table the awesome work you are already doing on your campuses. This offers a chance to continue to learn from each other, network, and build community campus to campus.

Costs:

Conference fee is $200.00 per person (with the possibility of subsidy for people in financial need). Participants are expected to cover the cost of their travel and accommodations; the University of Victoria will have accessible rooms reserved for folks who are interested in staying on campus. The materials at this conference will be sensitive in nature and therefore must be facilitated within a safer space. This means there is limited space (20-25 seats), and that we recommend no more than two representatives be sent from each institution or organization.

Registration

We are hoping to find registrants from colleges and universities who facilitate workshops on campus and/or people who would like to engage in a consent campaign on their campus. If you think this could be a good fit for you and your institution, pls email us at outreach [at] antiviolenceproject [dot] org
