Red Umbrella March – Saturday Dec. 17

Dear AVP friends,

December 17th is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, also known as Red Umbrella Day. This day and march represent a call for the end of unjust laws and policing that prevent the reporting of violence by sex workers. Racism, classism, colonialism, and sexism inform these laws and the cultural environment that sees the violence perpetrated upon sex workers as different from violence against others. Please join in taking a stand for autonomy, dignity and the freedom to work in safety with access to justice!

The Red Umbrella March will start at the corner of Government St. and Discovery St. at 12pm on Saturday December 17th and will march to the Legislature for speeches, food and warm beverages. Join sex workers and their allies at the march to say violence against sex workers must stop now! Wear red and bring a red umbrella if you have one.

This event is co-organized by PEERS Victoria Resource Society, AVP, VIPIRG and the UVSS Women’s Centre; there is more information on the UVSS Women’s Centre webpage here

Please spread the word and we hope to see you on the 17th!
AVP
