
Wanna help us advise UVic on the creation of the university’s Sexualized Violence Policy? We’re hiring someone to work with us for 10-15 hours a week until July 2017 while the policy is created. Current and former UVic students are encouraged to apply. FUNCTION:
1. The Sexualized Violence Policy Advisor provides public relations support for the Anti-Violence Project (AVP) and acts as the main liaison with the University of Victoria around the Sexualized Violence policy.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
1. Reports to the AVP Advisory Board and the University of Victoria Students’ Society through the Executive Director.
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND:
1. Founded in 1964, the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) is an incorporated membership based non-profit that is autonomous from the University and provides advocacy, services and events to all undergraduate students at UVic.
DUTIES:
1. In a joint effort with the AVP Advisory Board and the AVP Coordinator, supervises the Work Study and/or project staff.
2. Provide support, information and referrals to individuals affected by gender based violence, as required.
3. Publicize AVP programs, services and events on campus.
4. Prepare responses to media coverage of issues surrounding gender-based violence.
5. Participate in volunteer recruitment and training, as needed.
6. Attend staff, volunteer, committee meetings, and other meetings, as required.
7. Ensure all activities and work performed are carried out in a manner consistent with the values of AVP.
8. Issue press releases to the media regarding AVP programming.
9. As capacity allows, initiate and complete projects around long-term capacity building / community development.
10. Navigate extensive weekly readings and case summaries while ensuring the AVP team is informed of new developments throughout the policy process.
11. Maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of the current policies and practices which exist at the in the University around the reporting and disclosure of sexualized violence.
12. As capacity allows, engage in research and broad consultation around issues of sexualized violence at UVic
13. Make other recommendations as appropriate regarding implementation of Sexualized Violence Policy
14. Perform other related duties, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Strong anti-oppressive feminist analysis of issues related to gender-based violence and abuse.
2. Experience working with/in social justice organization/s and/or sexual assault centers, minimum two years’ experience preferred.
3. Demonstrated experience in public/media relations.
4. Experience in crisis-intervention and support work, knowledge of community resources available to survivors of violence at UVIC and in the community.
5. Experience working with people who have caused harm to unlearn gender based violence.
6. Able to work independently and as part of a team of paid and volunteer staff.
7. Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete tasks involving long-term capacity building / community development.
8. Experience in organizational decision making, visioning (big-picture) and strategic planning.
9. Demonstrated leadership in a previous outreach environment, minimum two years experience preferred.
10. Minimum one year experience in policy development and research required
11. Demonstrated experience working with university administration on student-related advocacy issues
12. Demonstrated experience in relationship building with university administration
